My Rating: 4 out of 5

★★★★

I actually finished reading this book during our vacation to Utah, but I’m only now writing my review. In many respects, this was a very enjoyable book. For starters, it really jumped me back into thinking about my heritage, something I haven’t done for a while. It was also was a perfect tie-in to one of the activities we did at the cabin. Mom and Dad Ott showed us a video produced for their short handcart adventure to Martin’s Cove. Reading about the early Saints really put this into perspective.

The author tries to weave a fictional storyline into the actual events of early LDS history; sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. But overall, the effect is appropriate. You have to give the author credit for strategically placing his characters into each of the major locations important in early LDS history. Well, sometimes it is too perfect. The wayward son just happens to be part of all the really bad camps.

The only part that surprised me was the conversion of the father. Not that I wasn’t expecting it, but how it eventually came seemed too matter-of-fact. I guess I was expecting something different.
