Getting my iMac back from repairs was like having Christmas all over again (although, I didn’t get my iMac for Christmas…). I starting playing around with Automator again and stumbled upon a program hidden inside the Apple’s Developer Tools: Core Image Fun House. What I really wanted was to find some easy way to automate scaling images to put on this website. What I found was a tool set that resembled the new Apple program Aperture.

Like Aperture, Core Image lets you alter an image with non-destructive “layers.” Effects range from simple color changes to advanced warping, skewing, and blurring. What was so amazing was the real-time rendering of effects. A motion blur, for example, was selected and applied in real time. I could then alter the effect and move it around to get the image just the way I want. Although limited, Core Image presents effects in a way I wish Adobe would in Photoshop. With Photoshop, effects are virtually permanent—-unless you go back through your History Pallet and step backwards. Photoshop does have Adjustment Layers, allowing you to modify image color, histogram, etc., in non-destructive layers, but effects must be applied and take time to render.
The one thing Core Image did not let me do was the one thing I was looking for: scaling an image. For that, I guess I’ll have to use Photoshop, or an action set in Automator.
