Elise came up with a brilliant idea: create a sign to discourage the squirrels from eating our garbage can.
A few months ago, we found a circular hole on the lid of our brand-new garbage can; just the right size for a squirrel to fit. The teeth marks and scratching were obvious signs: we had a rogue squirrel. Maybe the entire population of squirrels, who knows. Neighbors warned us that the squirrels around here are more like rats, digging, foraging, and biting through anything—even plastic garbage cans—to get the sweet smelling food they want.
We started noticing other garbage cans around our block that had the same problem. The squirrels had been chewing through everyones plastic garbage cans. Once the holes were made, the bins were welcome and open to each and every squirrel around.
So, Elise had this brilliant idea to make a sign warning the squirrels to “stay away.” She told me what to write and so I helped build the sign. She colored the sign and attached a “stick” we could use to sure up the sign.
We’ll see how effective squirrels are in reading comprehension.
