Dutch Oven Stew?

With friends over, it was all play for the kids. The weather was also cooperating, so we were able to go outside and have some adventures. The kids played in mud puddles left over from the recent rain storms, and tracked mud across the kitchen floor. Elise was excited to have a BBQ with her friends so she started planning the event with Isaac. They started clearing the patio, sweeping away dead leaves and sticks. They even moved some of the large branches away that had fallen during the storm.

Elise guided me to what she wanted, and with particular detail, she outlined what we would be eating, including “root beer, salad, and hamburgers.” Elise felt it would be important to have this meal so “Mommy wouldn’t have to cook dinner and could have a break.” I sat down with Elise to write down a list of ingredients we would need. We modified the menu a little and decided on using the Dutch oven to create something “easy.”

I drove Elise down to the grocery store where we bought almost everything on our list (we couldn’t find any rolls), and then sped back to get started. By this time, Isaac was back from his adventure (a friend’s birthday party), and so he helped me chop carrots, potatoes, and start the charcoal.

In the Dutch oven, we cooked a roast, potatoes, and carrots, all bubbling in a stew of water and spices. It actually turned out great, but Melissa suggested next time not adding so much water and let the veggies cook in the fat. Sounds good to me!

Isaac suggested that our next Dutch oven dinner be lasagna.
