I found a great little AppleScript application today: Caption Buddy. It does what I've wanted iPhoto to do for some time: add IPTC data to images. Not only does Caption Buddy insert IPTC data (title and caption), but it also provides a much faster mechanism to edit the title and caption in iPhoto (in my experience, iPhoto is very slow to respond when you try to alter the title).
You can get Caption Buddy, and a many more iPhoto scripts, directly from Apple's AppleScript download section.
One other script I have not yet tried is the ability to insert a picture from iPhoto into iDVD as a menu background.
